Today I want to say thanks to Eben07 and DBethel (writer and illustrator, respectively, of the dangerous Eben07 webcomic) for graciously mentioning Eleanor in an upcoming podcast, and to DrCainsComics for the excellent shout on Facebook.
As for tonight’s new page: Obviously, things have changed.
The sea, the rocks, the shroud of blood have all been removed like set pieces on a Broadway stage. Now there’s just Eleanor, in this strange new nowhere.
Writing Eleanor’s fall was an interesting challenge. How much can you say about a girl tumbling through the air? In the first draft of the novel, I seem to recall hurling her from the cliff to the sea to a hospital bed. But her story has always turned itself over and shown me new sides, angles from which it sometimes glitters and sometimes swallows the light whole.
It was a revelation to discover that Eleanor’s fall was so much more than a literal one. And even more awesome to actually illustrate it.
If the previous page was one of my favorite pages for the writing’s sake, then this one’s possibly my favorite illustration of Eleanor herself. My anatomy is still questionable at best, but it’s amazing how that doesn’t matter when you start messing around with the fabric of space and time. Wormholes do interesting things to people.
Meanwhile: as I post new pages here, I’m deep into the next chapter of Eleanor’s story. Here’s a sneak peek of a far-off page. (I’m particularly proud of how the eggs turned out.)
